is the internet dead? October 25, 2007

is the internet dead? Now and then I browse through the Answers section on Linked In for a bit of enlightenment or occasionally, when the mood strikes me and the planets are aligned, to write a response. Today I saw this question, “is the internet dead?”

And some 33 (at time of writing) good people have proffered up a number of gems. Some are below. I am tempted to write “not while you can still search for ‘big cock’ and get this in return.” Any advances? Please tell me I should. I need moral support.

I’ve been using it all day and its pulse and respiration seem to be strong.

Yes, I am afraid it was stabbed to death by a :30 TV spot.

Uh, you might want to try plugging in that broad white cable dangling from the back of your computer into that wall outlet…

internet is kicking ass right now. Lets see, I can put up content and millions of people can access and rate my ideas and I don’t have to pay crazy media dollars. Yeah I’ll like that.

No, it’s just a pulled hamstring.

Send me a fax and I’ll get back to you.

UPDATE  26.10.07

I couldn’t resist. Here we go. As Billy Connolly would say, “do these things… they’ll improve your life no end!”

ad age power 150 bluurb

The AdAge Power 150 of blogs. Well, more than 150 actually but enough wisdom and thought in there to last a lifetime. And lo and behold, there’s little me! Rocking up at number 399. And I’m not last! Get in! Thanks Charlie & Todd ;-)

Looks like I may have some work to do on the various categories to creep up the chart though. Always homework…

I’m also allowed a nice badge (see over to the right). However, as javascript is verboten on WordPress I had to play safe & went generic. Shame, it dynamically displays your rank which I’d like.

O2 facebookherbal essences facebook

Facebook brand tie-ins that are bad get a lot of press. But here are two good examples. Herbal Essences which I found via Advergirl & O2 win a MASSIVE university big party thing. Leigh sums up why they both work very eloquently even though her comments are attributed to the shampoo stuff:

Set up as a group, not a personal account. You’re not a person, why pretend to be one?
Creative focuses on the ‘passion’ elements of the brand
Targeted approach to deliver visit > engage > share behavior (stuff to do when you’re there + a reason to come back)
And, the team invested in solid seeding behavior

linked in 1 million

There are now more than 1 million UK members of Linked In. And I can download a badge to add to my profile as I joined before it hit this landmark. So I did. But I’m not so sure why. A million is hardly exclusive. Does it help in anyway? Will it improve my life?

I walked back to Waterloo after a meeting in London Bridge on Friday. It was mighty cold. But took these two shots of London Bridge itself & the big spider thing outside the Tate. Thought you might like them.

find your flavour October 22, 2007

baileys art of flavour

Bailey’s are offering you the opportunity to find your flavour and promoting both the new mint (I’ve tried it and it’s ok) and caramel (not tried it but too sickly?) flavours. Site uses flash to serve up a few questions which you drag your cursor to the one you like the most. You then see your personal illustration come alive during the process which uses an eclectic mix of illustration & photography which although it didn’t go live, is incredibly similar to some work we produced for Smirnoff Experience back in the day. Still looks very fresh though. Although the end result seems a bit clunky rather than a nice, contained illustration. The sofa looks particularly at odds.

But then I’m splitting hairs here as they do let you embed the code for your illustration in your blog (tick), send to a friend and invite them (tick, tick) and not too overly salesy (tick) and fits the mood and personality of the brand well (tick). But is there a “mini” of the caramel I could try? I don’t want to spend over £10 if it sucks. Anyway, here’s my “personality” and my illustration. My flavour was mint by the way. Thankfully.

A cool customer to the core, you’re good to have around in a crisis. Although you like a joke as much as the next person, there is a calm and serious side to your nature which you take pride in. With a love of creature comforts, you prefer to socialise at home. When it comes to fashion, it’s a case of no pain no gain. Having said that, you’ve no time for people who don’t take care of their appearance. Some might say you were brash, but you’d call it honesty. Of course, nothing will stop you staying out late boogying with your friends. But you’re a closet techie, revelling in gadgetry if it can be chosen over a more simple life. And as for travel and adventure… who needs it when everyday life is a rollercoaster? Oh yes… and you’re feeling quite nice today.

bloggers choice awrds 2008 vote bluurb

I picked this up in May this year & since then I’ve had a massive 2 votes. Hahahaha. Anyway, the voting for all blogs this year has resulted in the top 3 in each category being named for 2007 & the winners will be announced in early November. The top 3 in best marketing blogs currently comprise:

Seth Godin, Copyblogger and Andy Beard.

I confess that I’ve not read two out of the three (bet you can’ guess which two) so I will have a looksie this week.

And with it not even being 2008 yet, you can vote for 2008. So vote for me. Come on, let me beat my total of 2 this year. I’ve even got a nice button on the right hand side now my wife has taught me how to do a bit of HTML geekery.

Vote for me, it’ll improve your life no end.
